Tom and Irene Smith of Winnetka hosted their second annual picnic for Hands of Peace on Tuesday evening, July 20, at Elder Park in Winnetka. Hands of Peace was founded in 2002 as an interfaith organization dedicated to nurturing peace, person by person. Israeli, Palestinian, and American teens develop peace building and leadership skills in a two-week program headquartered in Glenview.
The evening began with an old-fashioned picnic on the lawn. Folk singers Bud and John Nichols, Marty Smith, and Tim and Maggie Sheridan, all from Glenview, performed while the visitors ate. Then volunteer coaches set up a softball game. Head coach Neal Shapiro of Wilmette taught the teens the basics, and a lively game followed.
