New Trier Rowing Wins Gold and More at Scholastic Nationals

New Trier’s Rowing Team brought home gold, silver, and bronze from the Scholastic Rowing Association of America’s (SRAA) 76th National Championship Regatta, held in Saratoga Springs, NY, May 28 and May 29.

“It was the greatest ride of my life,” said Jordan Josellis, the “2-seat” rower in the Boys’ 3rd place Freshmen Eight.

Racing on a 1,500 meter course, the Trevian Boys’ Second Varsity Eight took 1st, the Girls’ Second Varsity Eight were 2nd, and the both Boys’ and Girls’ Freshmen Eights finished 3rd at SRAA Nationals. Additional top finishes included the Girls’ Varsity Eight (4th Place), Girls’ Junior Four (5th Place), Boys’ Lightweight Four (6th Place), Girls’ Varsity Quad (6th Place), and the Boys’ Varsity Eight (5th in the Petite Finals).

“I was pleased to see our Second Varsity Eight take home a National Scholastic title,” said Boys’ Varsity Coach Nate Kelp-Lenane. “After a lineup change four days prior to racing, the crew came together with determination. They improved their race throughout the weekend to beat the favored Winter Park (Orlando, FL) crew by half a length.”

New Trier was one of 180 high schools that qualified crews for Scholastic Nationals by finishing in the top 1-4 places at regional championship regattas around the country. The Trevians qualified 11 boats, which was the second largest number of entries (the host team Saratoga had 12) from one school to compete at Nationals.  A total of 86 rowers and four spares represented New Trier among 3,300 high school students, who vied for National titles in two days of heats, semi-finals, and finals.

“It was great to see all 11 boats advance directly to semi-finals from their heats,” said Rowing Director Rose Marchuk. “At the end of the regatta, what a lasting impression it made to see such a large group of 150 New Trier rowers and their parents, who together championed a historic season! It’s hard to believe that in just eight years since the program began, New Trier is nationally recognized as a rowing powerhouse.”

While most of the team finished its scholastic rowing season at SRAA Nationals, New Trier’s Girls’ Varsity Eight, Lightweight Eight, and Quad will go on to compete at the United States Rowing Association’s Youth National Championship Regatta, June 11 – 13 on Harsha Lake, Cincinnati, OH.
