Sukkot, which starts at sundown on October 12, is a week-long festive Jewish holiday rich in tradition and
meaning. It celebrates the harvest when crops are gathered and commemorates the story of the Jewish
people who had to wander the desert for 40 years before entering the land of Israel.
One of the main observances of the holiday is to build a Sukkah which is the Hebrew word for booth. This
structure made of natural plant materials and decorated with arts and crafts projects is where families eat
their meals and sometimes dwell during the festival.
Congregants of all ages at Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah – Wilmette participated in helping to erect
and decorate the synagogue's Sukkah in preparation of the holiday.
