Mayor of Chicago overcomes Wilmette roots

Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel in 1977 at New Trier West

Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel in 1977 at New Trier West

It was supposed to be a close race on February 22 – Election Day in Chicago – perhaps even the first of two races to decide the next Mayor of Chicago. Instead, once the polls closed at 7 p.m., it was over within an hour.

Rahm Emanuel, former resident of Wilmette/former advisor to President Clinton/former Chief of Staff to President Obama, is now the Mayor-elect of Chicago. In the six-way race, Rahm was chosen by over 55% of the voters. His next closest competitor was Gery Chico with 24%.

Gery Chico is the man who used Wilmette in the pejorative, along the lines of saying that Rahm Emanuel isn't a real Chicagoan – he might've been born in Chicago and he might live in Chicago – but he was raised in "Wilmette!" of all places.

While in Wilmette, Rahm attended the Romona School & Locust Junior High & New Trier West High School.

Rahm Emanuel is replacing the retiring Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley – son of the legendary Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley – and he will be sworn in on May 16th in Chicago.
