Golf cart death still under investigation

Skokie police say they haven’t ruled out homicide in their investigation of the mysterious golf cart death of a Kenilworth lawyer.

Lawrence Schad died Nov. 10 from injuries suffered Nov. 7 when a golf cart ran him over at the Evanston Country Club in Skokie.

Skokie police officials said the cart ran over him while he was playing a solo round of golf, but have not released any details from their investigation.

“Obviously with something of this magnitude we have to cover all angles,” said Skokie Police Public Information Officer Joe Marzigliano. He said there are “lots of legal aspects; a lot of legal people become involved. A lot of things have to be done,” including expert witnesses who can help conclude what happened.

Asked if the department is declaring it an accidental death investigation, Marzigliano said, “We’re not declaring anything.”

Homicide hasn’t been ruled out, Marzigliano said.

Steve Diamond, Schad’s law partner at the Chicago firm Schad, Diamond and Shedden, said he is unsure what happened, but said the notion that the death might not be an accident has crossed his mind.

“I only can say that from my experience golf carts don’t start up and run over people by themselves,” Diamond said.
