A car with four women crashed into the front of a Wilmette restaurant Friday afternoon, and two of them were taken via ambulance to an area hospital, said a Wilmette police officer on the scene.

The car they were in crashed through the front entrance and showered glass into the entryway of Convito Café and Market, 1515 Sheridan Road. The accident happened at about 1:40 p.m. Friday.

No one inside the restaurant was injured.

“I was butchering some short ribs and I was almost done and I heard someone say, ‘You need to come out here,’” said Noe Sanchez, the restaurant’s head chef.

The car apparently was attempting to park in a handicapped space when it hopped the curb and crashed into the front doorframe, leaving a V-shaped divot in its front end. A handicapped hang-tag was on the car’s dashboard, and a witness said the woman driving was elderly.

Sanchez, who was filling in Friday as the restaurant’s manager while others were away on vacation, said the two women who were taken to the hospital didn’t appear to sustain life-threatening injuries.

“It’s lucky,” he said. “The door is replaceable. A life is not.”

The response to the accident was swift — four fire vehicles, two ambulances and four police cars arrived at the scene within minutes.
