From Shakespeare to Silverstein: Local Students Perform in Elocution Contest

Second through Eighth Grade Contest Winners

Second through Eighth Grade Contest Winners

Recently, students from St. Michael Parish School took part in an annual poetry elocution contest. The students recited monologues, poetry and choral speaking and were judged on how well they expressed themselves, poise and their knowledge on the piece they recited.
The Benefit of Elocution Contests in Education
A rich vocabulary, poise and conviction are required during an elocution competition. These contests at school level give students the opportunity to combat a common fear – public speaking – at a young age. In preparing for the contest, a student is taught to connect with the audience and also understand the concepts of voice modulation.

Additionally, dedication and practice are very much essential before going on stage and the preparation must be a sincere effort. Participation in any speaking competition can also help to cultivate confidence in more timid students and highlight a unique talent in other students.
