Ramp repair work is scheduled to begin Friday at the Route 31 interchange with Interstate 88 in North Aurora, with the work requiring weekend-long ramp closures with detours through September.

No more than two ramps are scheduled to be closed at the same time, officials said.

The weekend closures are necessary to create a safe work zone for repairs to the interchange ramps, Illinois Tollway officials said in a press release.

Electronic message signs and construction signage will be put in place to alert drivers in advance of closures and detours, the release said. Up-to-date closure information will be posted on the Illinois Tollway website, according to officials.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, the two ramps connecting Route 31 to eastbound I-88 and westbound I-88 are scheduled to close with posted detours. The posted detour will direct Route 31 traffic to the Orchard Road interchange via Indian Trail Road.

Up to three weekends of similar ramp closures with detours will be needed to complete the work, according to the release.

Once repairs to the ramps are complete, work is scheduled to begin on the two ramps connecting eastbound I-88 and westbound I-88 to Route 31. Detours will be posted directing I-88 traffic to the Orchard Road interchange and on to Indian Trail Road to Route 31. For eastbound I-88 traffic this detour will be in advance of the Route 31 exit, officials said.

Up to three weekends will be needed to complete repairs to these ramps as well, according to the release.

The repairs on I-88 are being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Kane County and the village of North Aurora, as well as local fire and police departments, officials said.

Repair work on the ramps includes asphalt milling and resurfacing, patching of concrete pavement, pavement striping and curb replacement as needed, as well as shoulder repairs and resurfacing, the release stated.

In 2023, the Illinois Tollway maintenance work on I-88 will include ramp repair work at Route 31 and installation of new virtual weigh-in-motion systems at Orchard Road and Eola Road, as well roadway camera and ramp queue detection installation between Hoyle Road and Freedom Drive, officials said. This work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
