The homeowner of a house struck by an SUV on Tuesday said she was home with her husband and adult daughter when the vehicle hit the window of their living room.
“We heard this big crash. It came right through the side wall ,” said Joan Lorenzo, who lives in the 1500 block of Huntleigh Drive.
Police say the driver of the SUV was heading west on Farnham Lane, which intersects with Huntleigh Drive just east of Naperville Road, before losing control and striking a tree on Lorenzo’s lawn before hitting her house. The driver also hit a gas meter, causing a gas leak.
Lorenzo said she was in the living room with her husband and daughter when the car struck. Her curio cabinet came crashing down, shattering many of her Precious Moments collectibles.
“It’s still unreal,” Lorenzo said Wednesday. “I can’t quite believe it all happened.”
On Wednesday, because of the gas leak, the gas, electricity and water remains off in her home. She and her husband will have to stay somewhere else for about three weeks, Lorenzo said.
Lorenzo said she doesn’t know anything about the driver, including how fast he or she was driving. Police have not released any details about the driver, but Wheaton Deputy Police Chief Tom Meloni said an investigation continues. The driver and an adult passenger were transported with non-life threatening injuries to Central DuPage Hospital after the crash, Meloni said.
Lorenzo said she’s glad no one in her home was hurt.
“It could’ve been worse,” she said.
