"The Night Circus"
by Erin Morgenstern
Welcome to a strange, magical world at the end of the 19th century when two ageless magicians make a wager on who has the better apprentice; creating a game that even the players don’t understand the rules to. The arena is a night circus, unlike any that has ever been seen, drawing in curious entertainers and devoted fans. Unexpectedly, a deep attraction draws the two young competitors together, putting the circus and those around them in danger. The novel is brimming over with beautiful descriptions and unusual characters; Morgenstern’s engaging debut describes the magic and heartache of falling in love and finding one’s place in the world.

"The Leftovers"
by Tom Perrotta
It appears the Rapture has occurred; millions have been taken, while those left behind are left with a world not quite what it was before. This story takes place after the event, in Mapleton, a town not unlike our own, and the reader is witness to how the citizens live with the Sudden Departure. Some commit themselves to virtuous lives, others find themselves lost, but all are functioning only one day at a time. While this novel has a paranormal premise, it focuses on everyday people and the ties binding them to family, community, and values. A thoughtful read.
