Rugby in the Suburbs

Kids Scrumming Down in the Chicago Suburbs

Kids Scrumming Down in the Chicago Suburbs

The Warthog Rugby Club is about to begin its inaugural season in Warrenville but they need some support. "Support" is a term used often while playing rugby and for good reason. The players on the field have to support their other players in play because all of the phases of play rely on players working together to move the ball down field. If you are not supporting your teammates then the ball is likely to be taken away or stolen by the other team.

Right now the team needs support too. They are actively looking for more middle school aged kids to round out the team which will practice in Warrenville beginning April 3rd. The team meets Tuesdays and Thursdays and plays their games as part of the Illinois Youth Rugby Association (IYRA). The games are on the weekends either Saturday or Sunday. The season is short , running from April through the first weekend in June. The kids learn all of the fundamentals of the game and certain aspects of the game that are potentially more dangerous are left out of middle school rugby to lower the possibility for injuries. It is a great in between sport for wrestlers and football players.

The Warthog coaches are seasoned veterans of the game who have played at the collegiate and club level and some have even played internationally.

Support is also need in the financial realm as the team is actively trying to find a sponsor to purchase the rights to advertising on their jerseys which will be worn all over the Chicagoland area. A set of jerseys can be sponsored for $1500.00 and the team hopes a sympathetic reader or local business owner who might have been a rugby player in college will remember the need to support.

The team can be contacted through the IYRA website , www.iyra.org by clicking on the "Teams" tab or at the teams registration site, www.regonline.com/warthogsrugbyclub
