Woman scammed into wiring $8,800 for granddaughter, and more

The following items were taken from Tinley Park police reports Feb. 14

Theft

  • A 73-year-old Tinley Park woman was scammed out of $2,400 Feb. 9 when a woman who said she was her granddaughter called and said she needed bond money. A man who said he was a police officer then got on the phone and said the woman needed to wire $2,400 to Peru to help her granddaughter. After the first transaction, he called again and said she needed to wire another $6,400 to Ecuador. After the second transaction, the woman called her granddaughter to make sure she was OK and learned the previous phone calls had been a scam. Western Union was able to void the $6,400 money transfer but not the $2,400.

Burglary to a Residence

  • Three Midlothian men were arrested within blocks of a home they allegedly burglarized in the 16200 block of 76th Avenue at about 10 a.m. Feb. 9 when police were called to the area for a suspicious car and three suspicious suspects. All three men ran from police but were arrested in the area by 10:20 a.m. They stole shoes, video game consoles and equipment, a laptop, an iPad, and $150 in cash. Most of the items were recovered.

Criminal Damage

  • An 18-year-old Palos Park man was arrested at his home in the 10400 block of Palos West Drive at 4:22 p.m. Feb. 12 for criminal damage after he allegedly drove a motorized scooter into a cosmetics display case at Super Kmart, 16300 S. Harlem Ave., at about 4:30 p.m. Feb. 11. He was contacted after the incident and the license plate of the car he left in was captured on surveillance video.
  • A wooden fence south of Menards, 6851 159th St., was damaged between 8 p.m. Feb. 12 and 11 a.m. Feb. 13. Pry marks were found on the fence and broken pieces of the fence were lying on the ground.

Retail theft

  • A 19-year-old Orland Hills man and an 18-year-old Orland Hills woman were arrested at Super Kmart, 16300 Harlem Ave., at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 for retail theft after allegedly stealing seven video games they said they were going to sell for heroin. They were stopped by loss prevention officers as they exited the store.
  • A man was seen stealing a computer from Best Buy, 7330 W. 191st St., at about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 when a second man distracted a loss prevention officer. Surveillance video captured the incident and the two men leaving the store in the same car.
  • A 38-year-old Oak Forest woman was arrested at Menards, 6851 W. 159th Ave., for retail theft, battery and possession of a controlled substance after she was stopped by loss prevention officers for allegedly stealing a coil nailer. She pushed a loss prevention officers when she was stopped outside of the store and she also had a small amount of cocaine in her bra.

Domestic Battery

  • A 29-year-old Homewood man was arrested at an apartment in the 17200 block of 71st Court at 4:55 a.m. Feb. 12 for domestic battery after allegedly punching his girlfriend in the back of the head and stealing her purse while they both were intoxicated.

Threatening Phone Calls

  • A man made threatening and obscene phone calls to Ultimate Exposure, 17821 S. 80th Ave., at least a few times a day from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9.
