State treasurer brings Cash Dash to Tinley Park, Palos Hills

Residents hoping to fall into some unexpected cash might consider visiting a Cash Dash event hosted by Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford on Thursday.

The state treasurer’s office oversees money and unclaimed property that come from a handful of different sources, including abandoned safety deposit boxes, inactive savings and checking accounts, money orders and bill over-payments and more.

The treasurer’s unclaimed property division currently has about $1.5 billion in cash unclaimed, according to a press release from the office. The money and safety deposit items are turned over to the treasurer’s office by banks and businesses, then the treasurer’s office works to return them to their rightful owners through Cash Dash programs.

The Palos Hills event will be 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at City Hall, 10335 S. Roberts Rd. Rutherford will speak at the event at 1:15 p.m.

The Tinley Park event will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Village Hall, 16250 S. Oak Park Ave. Rutherford and Rep. Kevin McCarthy, D-Orland Park, will speak at 2:30 p.m.
