Two years after a car accident took out one of two monument signs outside of Tinley Park’s Village Hall, trustees are moving forward with plans to replace it.

Two brick signs formerly straddled the driveway from Oak Park Avenue into the village hall’s parking lot, but one was damaged by a car accident in 2009, officials said. Following the accident, village trustees saw the damage as an opportunity to update both dated signs with the village’s new logo, which can be found on other entryway signs around town.

The project went to bid in 2010, but it never moved forward because the lowest bid, about $52,000, was $12,000 more than what the village’s budget allowed, said Assistant Village Manager Steve Tilton.

An extra $10,000 was added to the project’s line item in this year’s budget to cover the expense, he said.

After going to bid for a second time, the lone bid to replace both the damaged and current sign came in at $56,500, still about $5,600 above the 2011 budgeted amount, Tilton said.

But  trustees gave initial approval for the project during a Public Works Committee meeting Tuesday.

Tilton said $4,000 of the bid price will be set aside as contingency funds that may not need to be spent, leaving a smaller gap of about $1,600.

Village trustees on the committee said extra dollars will likely be available to fill the gap because other capital projects are expected to cost less than their budgeted amounts.

The sign contract will be up for final approval by the full board at its July 19 meeting.
