Any villages or giants looking for a real Christmas tree to decorate this year happen to be in luck.
Tony Abete, who owns an apartment building on Ridgeland Avenue – and the 45-foot tall evergreen growing next to it – is looking for a good home for his beautiful tree.
The Homer Glen resident posted a listing on Craigslist last week advertising the tree as, “Free to a good home.”
“I don’t want to see it go to waste,” he said. “It would be a perfect tree for a village square.”
The giant evergreen has full branches all the way around that flow straight up to a symmetrical point that would be a perfect spot for a star to sit.
“All I know is when you look at trees that are this size, they don’t end up being this well formed,” Abete said. “But this one is just beautiful.”
He offered it up to the Village of Tinley Park, but learned the village uses an artificial tree each year.
“I just don’t want to see it in a chipper,” he said. “I would rather see it decorated.”
Abete has owned the apartment building at 17438 S. Ridgeland Ave. for about 20 years. He said the building was built sometime in the 1960’s, which means the tree is probably more than 40 years old.
The tree has always taken up a large portion of his property, but he is ready to get rid of it because it’s just a little too close to the building.
It would be a big job to cut down and transport the tree, but Abete thinks it’s doable.
“Somebody who knows what they’re doing would be able to take it down,” he said. “I don’t think it would be too difficult to get it out of there.”
If he doesn’t have any takers this year, Abete said he isn’t in a hurry to get rid of the tree and he’ll try again next year.
“I’d love for it to bring some joy to the little ones at Christmas,” he said.
