Man escapes from police, mom arrested in connection to retail theft

Ashley Rueff, TribLocal reporter

A Chicago woman is due in Cook County court Oct. 1 to answer charges she interfered with a police investigation of her son after he and a girl allegedly stole items from the Burlington Coat Factory.

Tinley Park Police pulled over the woman’s car after she picked up her son from the parking lot of a fast food restaurant near the Burlington Coat Factory. When she stopped the car, her son fled and was never located by police.

The woman allegedly refused to show her driver’s license to an officer three times and then struggled with police when they tried to put her in handcuffs, causing an officer to tear a hole in his pants. Police had to use a stun gun to subdue her.

A loss prevention officer from Burlington Coat Factory had identified the girl, who was also in the woman’s car, and the son as the pair that had stolen items from the store. The woman denied knowing anything about the theft to police and said she picked up her son at Popeye’s after losing track of him while they were shopping.

The woman was charged with three counts of resisting, one count of obstructing and one count of criminal damage to property. She was released on $1,000 bond. The girl was charged with retail theft and released.
