Man rescued from Streamwood pond

A man riding his bicycle through a Streamwood park fell into a partially frozen pond and had to be rescued Monday afternoon, police said.

Police said 43-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was conscious and in good condition when rescuers removed him from the pond at Glenbrook Park after receiving the call for help at about 3:45 p.m. He was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

Cmdr. Ed Valente of the Streamwood Police Department credited the quick rescue in part to children who were playing in the park, saw the man fall into the pond “and had the wherewithal to call 911.”

There is no bike trail in the park near Glenbrook Elementary School and Valente said there was nothing to indicate the anything other than an accident. Valente said the water from which the man was rescued was 5 to 7 feet deep. The bicycle was not recovered.

The park is adjacent to Glenbrook School, which was not in session Monday.

The rescue came hours after a man from far northwest suburban Johnsburg died after falling through ice while playing hockey with his son late Sunday, officials said.
