G.O.A.L.S. youth service group travels to New Orleans

The Youth Service group G.O.A.L.S. (standing for give, offer, advocate, love and serve) was created by Shaylee and Jenna Pedersen, two girl soccer players that wanted to encourage their teammates and friends to give back to others and have "goals" beyond just soccer. Fox Valley Strikers Soccer Club "adopted" the service group and promotes it to all ages of girls and boys soccer players in their league. The goal is to develop well rounded and caring youth.

Shaylee Pedersen, Jenna Pedersen, Christina Rueth and Sarah LeFevre drove with Kim Pedersen, G.O.A.L.S. adult mentor to the New Orleans area to work for Habitat for Humanity the week of July 11th 2011. The group worked on homes in Gray and Thibodaux Lousiana, scraping, priming and painting, measuring, cutting and installing insulation, designing and creating two tables and assisting in installing a water heater. They worked along side a Habitat construction manager, Americorp worker, local volunteers and a Habitat future homeowner, Mary Davis who has to contribute 350 sweat equity hours. The group was able to donate their hours for the week towards Mary's committment-she was thrilled!

In addition to working hard in very hot and humid weather, the group traveled to the lower 9th ward which was hardest hit by Katrina almost 6 years ago. They were able to view the homes that were devastated by the floods and have not been rebuilt or repaired since that time. They also saw the new stilted, solar homes being funded by Brad Pitt and built in the poorest and area of the 9th ward.

The group also visited the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, tried fried alligator and enjoyed beignets at Cafe DuMonde. They also were able to tour a bayou and feed the alligators marshmallows.
