Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I'm ready to start the New Year. The weather has been so nice lately. It doesn't feel like winter. While on vacation, I received many e-mails. This week is a question from one my female readers about dating a 'cheapskate.' I'm enclosing a story from my first book. The story includes a similar topic about one of my widowed moms dates. My mom has a wonderful male friend in her life now. When she first starting dating after becoming a widow, she tried online dating. Here's one of her dates.
Forgotten Wallet
She should have never met this man after speaking to him on the phone. He kept calling to tell her all about how he hated the price of everything lately. He didn't like to eat dinner out and he never liked to spend money on food even at the grocery store. She spoke to him several times on the phone before they met. He asked her out on a date for dinner to a restaurant he chose. He ordered all his favorite foods. He told her to order whatever she liked. Throughout dinner he kept 'checking' his pockets. He said, "It appears I forgot my wallet." She couldn't believe he said that. He continued, "Don't worry, I'll pick up the check NEXT time." She replied, "There won't be a NEXT time." She paid the check, stood up, walked away from him and went home. As she walked away from the table she said, "Goodbye.."
Dear Debbie Sue: "I went out with a guy for a few weeks. He never wanted to spend money on me. He ordered the least amount of food when we went out to dinner. He asked me to eat at home so I wouldn't be hungry for dinner! One weekend he wanted me to cook for him in my apartment instead of going out. So, I did. He said he'd 'rather rent a movie then go out and spend money.' Then, he asked ME to rent the movie! The next date, He joined me and some of my friends at a café'. He ordered a bottle of water and asked me to pay for it! He said I spend too much money on food when I go grocery shopping. He actually thought I'd go out with him again! Did anything like this ever happen to you?"
Dating a cheapskate.
Dear Dating a Cheapskate: I am lucky to have wonderful male friends in my life. Something similar happened to me on a date when I was in my late twenties. I went out with a guy that took me to a bar and ordered hot water. He brought his own tea bag! He got upset when the waitress charged him for his drink. Sometimes the only word you can say to a man that is a cheapskate is.. "Goodbye.."
Until next time..
