SPRINGFIELD, IL – Continuing his efforts to increase environmental responsibility, State Representative Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) passed legislation out of the Environment and Energy Committee on Wednesday that would increase opportunities to recycle old and outdated electronic devices.
Senate Bill 2106 overhauls the Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act (EPRRA). The bill would provide additional means to counties that would allow them to inform the public of the dangers of not recycling electronics, as well as establish locations to do so. Electronic devices such as computers and televisions contain materials that pose a risk to personal and environmental health. These raw materials also have a significant resale value.
“Often times, people don’t even realize that electronic devices contain chemicals and other potentially dangerous components,” Biss said. “Several other states have adopted laws similar to this and have been pleased with the results.”
The bill updates which products are covered under the EPRRA, and details new requirements for merchants and providers of electronic devices. Senate Bill 2106 also increases transparency in regards to enforcing these new requirements and preventing recycling centers from charging citizens to recycle the devices.
“This bill not only has a positive impact on the environment, but also helps expand the recycling industry, which will create new jobs in our communities,” Biss said. “Improving the economy and the environment are top priorities in the state, and this bill will be beneficial in both of these vital areas.”
