SUMMARY:“The Main Street Kids’ Club: A MathStart Musical”
DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie will host a special preview performance of "The Main Street Kids’ Club: A MathStart Musical", a new children’s musical based on six of the popular MathStart books by Stuart J. Murphy. TICKETS: Seating is general admission and tickets are $10.00. Due to the limited number of tickets available, advance purchase is highly recommended. Free parking is available. Tickets and information are available at 847-673-6300 or www.northshorecenter.org. For this special event, the stage of the North Shore Center’s Centre East Theatre will be transformed into an intimate 100-seat studio theatre for the first time ever. MEET THE AUTHOR: At 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the performance, Stuart Murphy will be in the lobby of the theatre to sign copies of his books and to hold an informal discussion on math skills as life skills, using visual learning strategies to help children master mathematical concepts and how parents and teachers can extend learning beyond the books. THE STORY: The Main Street Kids Club- or "M.S.K.C."- is a cool kids' club where they love to use math to figure out all kinds of things. The club motto: "Math skills = Life skills!" Toby, the "new kid in town," desperately wants to join. But he has to prove himself first. Will a 50 year-old treasure map he found do the trick? The MSKC is a story about math, friendship, buried treasure, hidden talents and teamwork. From the tale of Perry the Penguin saving up for an ice-scooter and the adventures of Captain Invincible and his trusty space dog Comet, to playing a game of “Less or More” and dressing up in 100 crazy outfits to celebrate “100 Days of Cool,” the talented and energetic Theatrebam Chicago troupe sing (and in one instance, waddle) their way through songs about mapping, bar graphs, negative numbers, comparing numbers, numbers 1-100 and three-dimensional shapes. As one third-grade critic who gave the show an enthusiastic “thumbs up” said, “Rad!” THE MUSICAL: MSKC was workshopped at Northwestern University and adapted by Scott Ferguson, co-founder and artistic director of Theatrebam Chicago. Scott’s long list of credits range from creating the hit show Schoolhouse Rock Live! to directing the recent critically-acclaimed Bailiwick Chicago production of Aida. Jeff Award-winner Michael Mahler, whose credits in include It’s Hard To Run with a Shell on Your Back (Aesop’s Fables) and Knute Rockne: All American, collaborated on music and lyrics.
