Man charged after gun allegedly fired in struggle with blind ex-girlfriend and her friend

A 67-year-old Elmwood Park man has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault following an incident at a Lincolnwood gas station in which authorities allege he fired a shot at his legally blind ex-girlfriend and her new friend.

Reynaldo Arrieta, 67, of the 2300 block of 74th Avenue in Elmwood Park, is schedule for a Feb. 23 hearing at the Skokie courthouse after his arrest in Lincolnwood on Feb. 13, police said.

Police received a 911 call at around 9 a.m. on Feb. 13 regarding a fight at a gas station in the 6400 block of Lincoln Avenue involving a man with a gun, investigators said. When officers arrived they took Arrieta into custody and recovered a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, authorities said.

Police said Arrieta had confronted his legally blind ex-girlfriend and her male friend at the gas station, and that when he threatened to shoot the male friend, a struggle ensued and a shot was fired before the gun jammed. There were no injuries.

A judge has ordered Arrieta held on $500,000 bond and has also forbidden Arrieta from having any contact with the alleged victims.
