Like playing with Legos? There’s a job for that

MET-AJ-2-LEGO-MASTER-BUILDER

Most parents probably wouldn’t think “playing with Legos” and “building important career skills” belong in the same sentence.

But they’d be wrong.

Legoland Discovery Center Chicago, which is in Schaumburg’s Streets of Woodfield, is looking for a new master model builder. The new artist, who will be chosen by a panel of adults and children, will be one of only eight in the world.

“Ideally, it’s not only a person who is a really advanced Logo builder, but someone who would also be great with people. They are the Lego rock stars for the kids,” said Senior Builder Dave Specha, who, unlike the master model builder, is more of a behind-the-scenes person. He spends his time repairing models that were tampered with by children.

Master model builders are typically people with some kind of relevant construction, design or engineering background, Specha said. Former Master Model Builder Dan Morey, who left last month, was previously a carpenter, and others have architecture degrees.

“It frees you from the adult world…and they can dream it and build it instantly,” said Specha, who has a degree in child psychology.

The Schaumburg builder will be responsible for localized builds, such as smaller 30 to 40-piece sets for workshops, as well as “group builds” where guests can help staff build larger models. The larger pieces in the store are actually built elsewhere — Darth Vader, for example, was built in the Czech Republic and the detailed Michigan Avenue set was constructed in California.

Applicants need to apply online by Feb. 17, and must include a one-minute YouTube video showing why they are qualified for the gig. Ten finalists will be chosen and on March 4 they will be given a “mountain” of Lego blocks to build unique displays from scratch — in front of an audience.

Since the building blocks, first introduce in the Denmark in the 1940s, are so ubiquitous, Specha said finding someone who spent childhood days building something from nothing is not exactly difficult.

“We get a lot of young guys and they have that childhood experience and an artistic background,” he said.

But those child prodigies out there are going to have to wait — applicants must be at least 18 years old and posses a “college degree or equivalent experience.” The pay scale is not being disclosed.
