As part of a stormwater management program, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago will provide rain barrels for a discounted price of $51 for Cook County residents.
The program was created to encourage residents to capture and reuse stormwater in the barrels to water their plants and flowers. Besides promoting a green lifestyle, rain barrels provide relief to sewer systems during rain storms.
The barrels will store 55 gallons, are 21 inches in diameter and are 34 inches high. They’re available in black, blue, terracotta or grey.
Residents can order a rain barrel by visiting, www.mwrd.org/irj/portal/anonymous/rainbarrel. Orders cannot be accepted by phone.
Rain barrels will be available for pickup from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 17 and Oct. 15, at the MWRD Egan plant, 550 S. Meacham Road, Schaumburg.
