A Schaumburg woman who was convicted of what prosecutors said amounted to the torture of her pit bull was sentenced to 1 year in prison Friday by a Cook County judge who determined she violated the terms of her probation.
Jenell Land, 33, of the 2200 block of Briar Hill Drive, was convicted by a jury in October 2009 of aggravated cruelty to an animal.
Judge Thomas Fecarotta Jr. had sentenced her to 30 months probation and also ordered her not to use drugs or alcohol or have contact with animals.
At a hearing Friday, Fecarotta agreed with prosecutors that Land had violated the drug prohibition after officers found her in possession of marijuana in January. He also found that Land had violated the curfew provisions of her probation. Under the felony conviction, Land could have been sentenced for up to three years.
At her trial, prosecutors said Land had chained her dog’s neck so tightly that it caused gaping wounds, and the animal had to be euthanized. Land is appealing the case, her attorney said.
