Mary Hasse, BSN, MS, JD, Lewis University assistant professor of Nursing, earned the 2011 Educator Award from the Illinois Nurses Association.
The nurse educator award is given to a member of the Illinois Nurses Association, who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of education at the state, local or national level.
The award recognizes Hasse as a role model to nursing students. Hasse "demonstrates excellence in teaching, improves curriculum and promotes the Illinois Nurses Association and the profession," commented Sharon Canariato, who presented the award. Canariato is the Lewis University National Alumni Association Vice President and Executive Director of Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders.
Hasse has a Master’s degree in psychiatric/mental health nursing and is a practicing attorney. She obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing at Prince Georges Community College, near Washington, DC. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and her Master of Science degree from Rush University. Hasse obtained her JD from Chicago Kent College of Law.
Hasse volunteers for the Campaign for Better Health Care, and is a volunteer attorney at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, where she acts as a Guardian ad Litem in minor and adult guardianship cases.
Hasse also ensures that the next generation of nurses understands the need for political activism and service. She has been instrumental in establishing the annual trip nursing students make to Springfield, Ill., to participate in Student Nurse Political Action Day. Hasse also coordinated nursing students in obtaining their service hours by working in the INA Chicago office.
"Essentially, Mary is a dedicated nurse, professional and INA member," concluded Canariato.
