Illinois Fencers Have Strong Showing in Windy City Tournament

Agnieszka Wiosna, the mom of Jakub and Kacper – two of the younger kids-members of the Illinois Fencers Club reports:
Sasha Heber, fencing for the Illinois Fencers Club (IFC), came away with a win at the Windy City Fencing Youth and Open Tournament at Menomonee Club, Chicago on January 29th. Heber took first place in the Youth 14 Mixed Epee event, while Kathy Gaertner and Sammie Doro, both from IFC, finished 5th and 7th respectively.

IFC fencers finishing in the top eight in the Open Mixed Epee event were Misha Heber 3rd, Dave Zeko 5th, Gabe Weininger 6th, and Nate Wegbriet 8th. Kathy Gaertner earned a US Fencing Association E rating in the competition and Nate Wegbreit rose to a D rating.

Members are setting their sights on the upcoming 2012 Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Salt Lake City February 17th to 20th. IFC fencers qualifying for the event include Sammie Doro, Kathy Gaernter, Gabe Weininger, Misha Heber, and Carl Lyday.

The Illinois Fencing Club promotes and teaches the Olympic sport of fencing to students of all ages and skill levels and provides a friendly venue for members to practice their sport. It is a member operated non-for-profit sports association that has been serving beginning, recreational, and competitive fencers for more than 40 years. The club meets in the Lions Recreation Center, 411 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect, IL 60056 and can be found on the web at http://www.IFCfencing.org.

A free fencing demonstration and basic instruction for youth ages 8-13 will be presented by IFC fencers on February 25th at 3:30 p.m. at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N.
