Police believe the two people who died during a shooting at an apartment complex in Prospect Heights Monday afternoon were a boss and his employee.
Police believe the shooting is a murder-suicide, said Prospect Heights Police Chief Jamie Dunne.
Monday afternoon, Keon Suk Oh, 46, whose last known address was the 1600 block of North Cypress Pointe Drive in Vernon Hills, entered the Lake Run condominium complex at 16 Old Willow Road.
There, he attacked resident Donna H. Yu, 42. Yu was a waitress employed by Suk Oh at a Glenview restaurant. Police are not releasing the name of the restaurant and are not elaborating on the relationship between the two, other than to say they knew each other.
“At this point, we aren’t going to air their personal issues,” Dunne said.
Police received numerous phone calls at 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon reporting the attack, including one from Yu.
When police arrived moments later, they found Suk Oh and Yu dead in the hallway in the fourth floor of the building.
They recovered a Ruger .40 caliber semi-automatic weapon from the scene.
Police are continuing the investigation Tuesday morning.
Yu was recently divorced and had been a Prospect Heights resident since 2010. She lived in the condominium complex alone. Suk Oh is married.
Neighbors said the Suk Oh family kept to themselves and moved out of the home about eight months ago, though they returned from time to time. At one point a For Sale sign was posted on the front lawn, though it’s since been removed, they said.
Black sandals sit outside the Vernon Hills home and a garbage bag, picture frames, and a baseball cap, among other items, can be seen inside.
Neighbor Carol Hawkinson said she sensed something was wrong with the family, but they never showed signs of distress.
A few weeks ago she and her husband saw Keon Suk Oh, who went by Paul, playing golf near his Vernon Hills home. They said hello, but she regrets not stopping to chat with him.
“We thought, ‘He must not be that depressed, he’s playing golf,” Hawkinson said. “Maybe we should have talked with him. Oh, I feel bad.”
