Electrical Aggregation To Be Placed on March Primary Ballot

Plainfield, IL — In March, residents will be given the opportunity to vote on a referendum relating to electricity supply. The Village of Plainfield is pursuing electrical aggregation and Illinois law requires the Village to place a referendum on the ballot to ask voters for the authority to aggregate electric accounts and seek bids for power generation. The Plainfield Village Board approved the placement of this referendum question on the ballot and it will appear as follows:
"Shall the Village of Plainfield have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such
a program?"

Electric Aggregation is a program that allows local governments to bundle, or aggregate, residential and small commercial retail electric accounts and seek bids for a cheaper supply of power. Currently, ComEd customers receive electricity at a price set each year by the Illinois Power Agency, a governmental body that secures electricity on the wholesale market on behalf of ComEd. By bundling residential and small commercial accounts, municipalities can go out into the open market to seek a lower rate for electrical supply.

If the referendum is approved, the Village will join forces with the Will County Governmental League and other Will County municipalities to request proposals for electricity. Only energy suppliers certified and regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission can respond. A new supplier will then be selected if the rate is better.

Residents will have the opportunity to opt out of the program before it begins if they wish. For more information and a list of frequently asked questions regarding electrical aggregation, visit www.willelectricaggregation.org.
