Plainfield’s Lockport Street pedestrian bridge will be getting a makeover this summer.
The village was awarded a $1 million grant for path improvements along Lockport Street from James Street to the village center. The project includes widening the pedestrian bridge and making it handicap accessible. Other improvements include lighting along the pedestrian bridge.
Construction on the project is expected to start this spring. Once the project is completed, walkways from the downtown business district to Village Hall will be ADA compliant.
“It’s going to be a huge safety improvement and an amenity to the community,” said Allen Persons, Plainfield’s director of public works.
The village was awarded the federal grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Persons said improvements will be made along both sides of Lockport Street, but the majority will be along the south side of the road where the pedestrian bridge is located.
