The remains of Plainfield Pfc. Andrew Meari, who died Monday in Afghanistan, will return home next week, his family said.

Meari’s body is expected to fly into Midway Airport on Tuesday morning and be escorted to Fred Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, in Joliet, said Todd Williams, Meari’s uncle.

The family would appreciate if people lined the streets as the body is escorted Tuesday. The procession is expected to pass by Plainfield South High School, where Meari attended before moving to Wisconsin to graduate. More details about the route will be available on Monday.

“We appreciate the show of support and respect,” Williams said.

The wake is scheduled for noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and at 1 p.m. Thursday there will be a procession from the funeral home to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois, for a funeral service.

Meari, 21, died when his unit was attacked with a vehicle-borne explosive device in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Meari was an infantryman assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. He joined the Army in October 2008 and was based in Fort Campbell, Ky., where he was stationed in February 2009, according to the Army.

Meari and another soldier in his platoon took the brunt of an improvised explosive device after coming off patrol on Monday, saving the lives of the other soldiers traveling with them, Williams said.
