Plainfield police offer engraving kits to secure valuables

Plainfield residents concerned about theft can borrow an engraving kit from police to discourage burglars from taking their things.

Plainfield Police Officer Mark Siegel said using the kits to engrave identification numbers onto valuable property will discourage theft and increase the chances of items being recovered if they are ever stolen.

He said the opportunity to borrow the kits is a new program by the department rather than a response to increased burglaries in the area, but he said citizens have contacted police concerned about burglaries.

“This is just an extra step they can do,” Siegel said of using the engraving kits.

He also recommended people keep their cars and houses locked at all times and report suspicious activity in neighborhoods to police.

To borrow an engraving kit, visit the Plainfield Police Department between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at 14300 S. Coil Plus Drive. A refundable $20 deposit is held for use of the kit.
