Dads build fire pit at Wildwood Nature Center

Bob Szkwarek wanted his 9-year-old daughter to have lasting memories of her time as a Park Ridge Indian Princess, so he rounded up a group of other scout dads and shared his vision: build a fire pit and seating area for their organization's ceremonies and meetings. Szkwarek, 41, was a Park Ridge Indian Scout as a child, which helped him grow closer to nature and allowed him to spend quality time with his father. It's times like those he relishes. "Growing up as a child, there's certain things I still remember today," he said. "I wanted to create that same feeling for the girls." On a recent weekend, Szkwarek and a dozen or so other fathers built a brick fire pit that is 4 feet in diameter and an octagon seating area at the Wildwood Nature Center in Park Ridge. The Home Depot in Niles donated about $100 for the project and the fathers pitched in the rest, roughly $900. For the full story, click here.
