Consolidated High School District 230 has an initiative called S4, which stands for Successful Schools – Successful Students.
Stagg High School, one of the three in the district, could have written its own S4 version for a day. Call it Stagg’s Super Successful Saturday.
One present and one past Charger athlete enjoyed a huge day in their sport.
Senior wrestler Kevin Moylan pulled off a dramatic Illinois High School Association state championship in Champaign while former volleyball star-turned-bobsledder Katie Eberling helped her USA team win a bronze medal in the World Championships in Lake Placid, New York.
Moylan’s Class 3A title at 145 pounds gives the district four straight Saturdays of bringing home a state title. On Jan. 28, Andrew won the state boys bowling title and Sandburg’s Joey Kopera won the individual title. Sandburg brought the competitive cheerleading state title back to Orland Park Feb. 4. Andrew’s girls bowling team won the state crown Feb. 11 and Moylan continued the streak Saturday. Although Sandburg did not have an individual wrestling championship, the Eagles are a favorite to win the team title this weekend.
Moylan, a four-time state qualifier, finished third in the De La Salle Sectional at 145 pounds, Feb. 11, but was able to make a deep run into the state Class 3A meet and upset favorite Bryce Brill of Mount Carmel, 3-2, in overtime in the title match.
“I was trying to hold on for dear life to be honest,” Moylan told the Tribune after the match. “He’s a real tough kid. This is one of the toughest (weight) brackets here and I welcomed it and I’m glad I got it done. I’m in sheer disbelief and amazement.”
Eberling, 23, is a former volleyball star who played at Western Michigan and started bobsledding last year. Eberling and Elana Meyers were one second behind gold medalist Canada and .67 seconds from silver medalist Germany in the World Championships.
The Palos Hills native called the finish “surreal” and told the Tribune “It’s absolutely incredible how much my life has changed in a year.”
