This recession has made frugality and budgets coolfor the first time we can remember. Personally, I no longer groan and fight Nick to sit down and revisit our monthly numbers of expenses, savings/retirement contributions and fun money. In fact, Im now the one busting out the budget. And given his experience in family law, we actually do our budget on page 3 and 4 of the disclosure statement from the Circuit Court of Cook County , 198.173.15.31/Forms/pdf_files/CCDR0604.pdf. It breaks down every possible expense, and for a non-numbers person like me, its really helpful to have everything outlined.

With this new hip-to-be-saving culture that hopefully will stick around, weve read countless articles praising the services and materials available from our library system, and we could not agree more. While I love buying a new book, our townhouse is already filled to the brim, and libraries were green long before this latest craze.

Perhaps, the fact the my Granny was a librarian in Brady, Texasliterally the heart/dead center of Texasgives me a predisposition to admiring the men and women who not only make our libraries function efficiently but also ensure its materials appeal to a wide range people. Overall, Ive never met a more helpful and nice group of professionals. They wont do your research for you but willing help point you in the right direction. If you havent taken advantage of its plethora of resources and services recently, you should take another looknow!

This Saturday, December 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Palatine Library, www.palatinelibrary.org, is hosting an open house to showcase its newly renovated second floor space that features an expanded computer lab, small group study rooms and a self-serve caf. They have a few fun activities planned and prizes so make sure to stop by.

Did you know that your valid home library card from the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) library will be accepted at another NSLS library? Even though were a Schaumburg zip code, our tax dollars go to Palatine Township, which is closer anyway. But I can pop into the library closest to my office and borrow books with as much ease as I do in Palatine. Andif you put a request in for an item, the library will email you when its ready for pick up and provide you with a few days to pick it up. Ive read a lot of new releases this year because of this service. You can also reserve study rooms from the Schaumburg library online now too!

Regardless of your interests, your local library has something worth your time. And dont forget to thank your librarian.
