Palatine honors cops, resident who saved woman who fell through ice

The Palatine Village Council honored five members of the police department and a resident who helped save a woman who fell through ice Jan. 22.

The council recognized  officers David Brandwein, Angelo Calanca, Peter Dawson and Police Assistant Kevin  Freese and resident Marie Thurston for helping save a 45-year-old woman who fell through a partially frozen pond on the 1000 block of North Smith Street. Thurston heard the woman call for help, contacted police and talked to her to try to keep the woman calm. Upon arrival, the officers then teamed up to pull the woman from the water.

The woman was treated for mild hypothermia and released the same day.
