Flashlight tips off resident to attempted burglar, and more

The following items were taken from Palatine Police on Feb. 7. 

Residential Burglary

  • Someone tried to break into a home on the 100 block of North Greenwood Avenue at 12:13 a.m. Feb. 5. The resident was in a basement bedroom when an unknown offender shined a flashlight. The resident looked outside and saw someone running from the property. The resident found an outside window well cover removed.
  • A safe containing documents, a wedding ring, an engagement ring, cash and three watches were stolen from a residential unit at 1 Renaissance Place between 1 p.m. Jan. 29 and 9 p.m. Feb. 5. Police believe the door to the home may have been unlocked.

DUI

  • A 31-year-old man, of the 1300 block of North Turtle Creek Drive, was arrested on the 1800 block of North Frontage Road at 3:30 a.m. Feb. 4 and charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence. He was also cited for driving without a license, driving without insurance and improper lane use.

Retail Theft

  • A 25-year-old woman, of the 0-100 block of East Palatine Road, and a 27-year-old woman, of the 1500 block of East Norway Lane, were arrested at Wal-Mart, 1555 N. Rand Road, at 3 p.m. Feb. 1 and charged with misdemeanor retail theft. Police said the two women tried to steal groceries and clothing with a total value of $130.

Vehicle Burglary

  • Saws, drills, nail guns and an air compressor — with a total value of $2,270 — were stolen from a vehicle parked on the 1400 block of North Winslowe Drive between 5 p.m. Feb. 2 and 8 a.m. Feb. 3. The owner is not sure if the vehicle was locked, but there were no signs of forced entry.
  • An in-dash navigation system, a hard drive, a radar detector and multiple CDs — with a total value of $610 — were stolen from a vehicle parked on the 1700 block of North Rand Road between 9 and 11:35 p.m. Feb. 2. The driver’s side door lock was punched in.
  • A laptop, valued at $1,700; a backpack; and coins were stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive between 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 and 8 a.m. Feb. 1.
