Cops: Woman struck, killed by vehicle was running across street

A 24-year-old Chicago woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle in Palatine Thursday evening was running across four lanes of traffic when she was hit, police said Friday morning.

A 2001 Toyota Camry struck Yesenia Enriquez in the the far right northbound lane of Quentin Road near Peder Drive at about 5:30 p.m., according to officials. According to a driver not involved in the crash, the pedestrian ran from west to east across all four lanes of Quentin before getting struck. Police said the incident did not occur at a crosswalk or intersection, the roadway was dark and Enriquez was wearing dark-colored clothing.

When paramedics arrived about three minutes after the incident, Enriquez was not breathing, had no pulse and suffered “multiple traumatic injuries, including head injuries,” said Palatine Deputy Fire Chief William Gabrenya. Paramedics transported her to Northwest Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The female driver of the vehicle has not been cited, but the incident is still under investigation, said Palatine Cmdr. Mike Seebacher. The vehicle sustained “moderate damage.”

Investigators are working to determine the speed the vehicle was traveling when the accident occurred. The posted speed limit at that portion of Quentin Road is 40-miles-per-hour.
