"Hummingbird Heaven"

I've always considered myself lucky to have Ruby-throated Hummingbirds visit my garden each spring & summer; however, while on a trip to Arizona in January, I found myself in "hummingbird heaven!"
Arizona has the largest number of hummers in the US, with reports varying between 16-18 species.
I was fortunate enough to see & photograph several of those, including a female on her nest! Their tiny, cup-shaped nests are made from mosses, lichens, or other soft materials, held together by bits of spider web, and are only about the size of a golf ball. Normally, the female lays two, jelly bean sized eggs and guards her nesting site, chasing would be intruders away. The devoted "mom" will feed her babies a combination of insects and nectar so they will be fully developed fliers by 21-29 days.
