2009 was a year of accomplishment and celebration for St. Michael in Orland Park. After years of developing and planning new facilities, programs and equipment, this was the year all the hard work paid off.

When construction completed on the new multipurpose facility and updated commons, the space opened for students, staff and parishioners of St. Michael to use for sporting events, meetings and special occasions. The new facility was funded by donations of generous members of St. Michael parish and school.

Donations also made possible the purchase of advanced technology-based equipment that benefits each student. The Interactive Distance Learning System (IDL) was up and running in 2009, allowing students and teachers to interact with people all around the world. Through Vanderbilt University, a holocaust survivor gave her personal account to the 8th grade history class and they were able to ask her questions. Seventh grade students traveled to the Ohio Historical Society for a lesson on U.S. government. The students took part in a game show-style presentation in which they tested their knowledge of government. On Veterans Day, students and visitors had the very unique experience of talking with soldiers in Iraq about everything from baseball and the weather to politics and life in general.

Thirteen Smartboards were also purchased, making hands-on, interactive learning available in almost every classroom. Sr. Pat McKee, who has been on staff at St. Michael for 30 years, is a member of the order that opened the school 60 years ago. In 2009, Sr. Pat returned to the classroom to teach religion and has incorporated the Smartboard as part of her lessons.

For many alumni who attended St. Michael and now send their children to the school, having Sr. Pat back in the classroom is a treat. Alum, parent and current School Advisory Board President Beth Ryan says, Sr. Pat has seen generations of families pass through St. Michael School. Its a rare and unique experience for our children to be taught by someone that taught us.

When St. Michael community members reflect on the past year, they will certainly remember an assortment of accomplishments that have enriched the school, such as the opening of the preschool program with a full roster and a waiting list for 4 year olds. A new web site was launched. The World Language Program added French to its curriculum, and currently both Spanish and French are taught starting in preschool. A new pastor, Fr. Paul Burak and associate pastor, Fr. Mike Foley were graciously welcomed to the community. The second grade (now third grade) became the National Olympiad winners in Language Arts and Social Studies.

And who could forget the varsity football team winning the Southside Catholic Conference Championship by one point? Their trophy is one of several from 2009, including the varsity cheerleaders who won the State Championship, along with two basketball conference championships and two soccer conference championships.

Students, parents, staff members and parishioners are proud and excited to continue into 2010 with the growth and advancements that are becoming elements of the rich and long-standing history of St. Michael.
