Orland Park Police say a local woman went on a vehicular rampage after her son was taken into custody on suspicion of burglarizing a neighbor’s home.
Samar Hadid, 38, of the 13300 block of Lahinch Drive, was charged with reckless driving, resisting arrest and three counts of aggravated assault after she allegedly used her sports-utility vehicle to threaten police officers, who had arrested her son, Hasan A. Hadid, 18, and a 17-year-old.
Both teens are charged with residential burglary in connection with the May 21 break-in on the 9300 block of Dunmurry Drive. Police declined to release the name of the younger teen, citing his age.
According to police, officers were concluding their investigation around 7:30 p.m. when Samar Hadid pulled out of her driveway and, with engine revving and tires squealing, drove at a police officer and sergeant standing in the roadway, almost striking them.
Police said she continued speeding southbound before abruptly turning left onto Dunmurry, where she sped away with tires squealing. She pulled into a driveway before returning to the street, speeding back to the intersection where an officer was standing, police said.
Hadid stopped when the officer approached her vehicle, police said. But she allegedly refused to cooperate when he told her to get out and that she was under arrest for reckless driving and aggravated assault.
“At this point, the driver began screaming at the reporting officer using profanity,” refused to exit the vehicle and continued to scream, police said.
It took three attempts and the assistance of a second officer to extract Samar Hadid from the vehicle, police said. She actively resisted and continued screaming as officers attempted to handcuff her.
Around 9:25 p.m. she was transported to Palos Community Hospital for treatment of her arms. At the hospital, Hadid said she’d been arrested because she’s a Palestinian and the officer is Jewish.
Police were originally summoned to the Southmoor Subdivision home on the 9300 block of Dunmurry Drive around 6:15 p.m. by the new residents, who had been going back and forth gradually moving in their possessions. As the family pulled into the driveway, the wife saw two males inside the home through the large front window.
She called police, then went to the backyard to try to catch them coming out on the elevated back deck.
A golfer on the Palos Country Club golf course, which abuts her property, told her he saw two males come out onto the deck, drop 25 feet to the ground and run away. Neighbors came forward, pointing the direction the duo took, police said.
A son headed after them and stopped one of two suspicious teens he’d been following. The 17-year-old said he was a witness who had been running because he also was chasing the two suspects.
Police took Hasan Hadid into custody after a witness reported seeing him run into the rear of his home. Police arrested the 17-year-old after further questioning.
Items reported taken from the residence included an Epiphone Casino guitar, Apple Mac Book laptop computer and a black-and-red skateboard. Police later determined entry had been made by forcing open a sliding glass door in the rear of the house.
Mother and son are free on bail; the 17-year-old remained in Cook County Jail Thursday June 16 in lieu of $50,000 bail. Samar Hadid is scheduled to appear in Cook County court July 19.; the two teens on Friday.
