Constructor Fair offers crafts with an edge
The 3rd annual Constructor Craft Fair offered a hip twist to kitschy craft fairs of the past. Founded by Julia Nash owner of Fly Bird boutique in Oak Park, the event featured 63 artisans from Chicago, Wisconsin and Indiana and took place at Fitzgeralds Night Club June 6. The event is similar the Renegade Craft Fair that takes place in major U.S. cities each year and that is where Nash found her inspiration to start her own in the western suburbs. There is so much more to craft fairs, people dont realize how some of this work is really design forward, Nash said. Some of the items for sale included funky jewelry, mod bags and whimsical T-shirts. Artist Stefanie Lin who came in from Madison, Wis. was excited this years event was open to out of state artisans. It is great to take what your grandmother and mom taught you and put your own spin on it to push it to the next level, Lin said.
