A 17-year-old boy was killed and 11 other people were wounded in shootings across the city Saturday afternoon and night.
The night’s lone homicide happened about 12:04 a.m. Sunday in the 3100 block of West Polk Street in the city’s East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, about two blocks south of the 11th District police station.
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the head and leg and pronounced dead at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. He had been walking with a group when someone opened fire, police said. Police had a hard time managing a crowd for a few minutes after the shooting.
The teen was identified as Brandon Peterson of the 3000 block of West Polk Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. According to an autopsy performed by the medical examiner’s office later Sunday, he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
In other shootings:
* About 4:20 a.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man walked into Jackson Park Hospital after someone had shot him near 79th Street and Maryland Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. He was walking and got into an argument with someone who shot him, police said.
* Another man, 37, was shot in the 9300 block of South Greenwood Avenue in the Burnside neighborhood about 3:53 a.m. He walked into Advocate Trinity Hospital with wounds to his elbow and back, police said.
* In the Palmer Square neighborhood on the city’s Northwest Side, someone shot a 21-year-old woman about 2:55 a.m. in the 3000 block of West Lyndale Avenue. She was with her boyfriend, who police said is a gang member, when someone in a light SUV fired toward them, police said. She was taken to Norwegian American Hospital with the gunshot wound.
* Two people were shot in the Pilsen neighborhood on the Southwest Side about the same time as the Palmer Square shooting. Someone on 18th Place just west of Paulina walked up to a car and asked two 23-year-old men inside where they were from. After they responded “here,” he shot them, police said.
Neither of the 23-year-olds have an arrest history or documented gang affiliation, police said. Both were taken to Stroger hospital – one with stomach and rib wounds in serious condition and the other with a shoulder wound in stable condition.
* Two others were shot in the 5600 block of South Emerald Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side about 2:40 a.m. A 20-year-old woman was shot in the side and taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital after she walked into the University of Chicago Hospital with the wounds. A man, 38, was shot in both legs and remained at the University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition, police said. The pair was on a porch when three young men emerged from a gangway and at least one started shooting, police said.
* Before that, in the 2900 block of South Poplar Avenue in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side, a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg. He was dropped off at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and transferred to Stroger hospital in serious condition. He had been shot in the leg and buttocks, police said. Someone walked up and shot him while he was playing basketball inside the park about 11:10 p.m. Saturday, police said.
* About 10:50 p.m., someone shot a 33-year-old man in Englewood, police said. The man was standing on a sidewalk near the corner of 57th Street and Racine Avenue when another person shot from a passing car. The 33-year-old was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with a buttocks wound.
* A 38-year-old man was shot about 2:45 p.m. on the 400 block of West 118th Street in the city’s West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney. The man suffered a wound to his buttocks and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his condition was stabilized, said Sweeney.
* Also this afternoon, about 2:45 p.m., a 22-year-old was shot on the 1600 block of South Indiana Avenue in the city’s Prairie District neighborhood on the South Side, said Sweeney. The exact time of the shooting was not available because the victim took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said Sweeney. The man suffered a wound to his left leg and was in stable condition at the hospital, said Sweeney.
