Oak Park’s village manager of five-and-a-half years, Tom Barwin, announced his resignation from the post at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

At the very end of the board meeting, Barwin read a statement to the board and announced his last day as Feb. 29. Barwin said he does not currently have another village manager position lined up.

“I’ve been too busy,” he said. Barwin confirmed he is not retiring. He also said he plans to continue to live in Oak Park for some time.

Barwin said he started with Oak Park on Aug. 6, 2006, making his time with the village five years and seven months.

When asked if his resignation was a decision he made on his own, Barwin referred to his statement.

“I think my statement speaks for itself,” Barwin said.

Trustees did not offer much comment after the board meeting Tuesday night.

“I think what’s important is Tom’s resigning,” Trustee Collette Lueck said.

In his statement to the board, Barwin touched on various accomplishments he’d been a part of during his time as village manager, including helping the village find its way back to a positive fund balance. Quick storm recovery during 2011′s blizzard, various new environmental initiatives and keeping the village afloat through the recession were among other topics Barwin touched on in his statement.

“I am leaving knowing we have not slipped during my watch and in fact made significant gains during tough times,” Barwin said. “I am comforted as I leave knowing the community is in very good hands to take advantage of the many significant opportunities which have been created over the past few years and are now in play.”

Village President David Pope said Barwin helped the village to return to a position of fiscal strength. Pope also dubbed Barwin a “visionary for sustainability.”

Pope said the board will quickly look to name an interim village manager and soon begin the process to name a permanent replacement.
