The Oak Park Art League is continuing to celebrate 90 years of artistic influence by showcasing the work of former league members at the Oak Park Public Library this month – with some of the art pieces nearly 100 years old.

The display, which kicked off in early January, features 28 vintage paintings and photography, library spokeswoman Debby Preiser said, with one of the pieces dating back to 1912. The exhibit includes items from the league’s permanent collection donated by OPAL members.

“There’s a really nice variety in the exhibit,” Preiser said. “You can see how painting styles have changed over the years.”

Preiser said a retired art restoration expert from the Art Institute in Chicago, stopped by the exhibit recently and left thoughts in the comment book.

“Wonderful examples of the collection,” the restoration expert wrote. “All reflective of an evolving collection. Continued success as (the art league) continues on.”

The art league has been stationed out of its current studio, located at 720 Chicago Ave., since it was purchased in 1937 after what the league calls “a massive fundraising effort.”

OPAL Board President Ken Reif said the 90th anniversary events kicked off in 2011, but celebratory exhibits and activities are currently planned throughout the early months of 2012.

Reif, who came on as president in November 2010, said the studio not only serves as a meeting place for people, but also showcases local talent.

“The Art League offers a great outlet for creative people,” Reif said. “We offer all kinds of classes and opportunities for exhibit. It’s a very friendly place.”

“We’re striving to reach out to other art leagues and schools to spread art throughout the community,” Reif said.

The OPAL exhibit at the library will be open until Jan. 30, Preiser said. For more information about the art league, go to opal-art.com.
