8-year-old injured after hit-and-run

An Oak Park man has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident after an 8-year-old Chicago boy was struck and injured, Oak Park police said Tuesday.

At about 4:37 p.m. Saturday, an 8-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle turning on the 1000 block of South Taylor Avenue, according to police reports. The vehicle did not stop for a stop sign and left the scene after the boy was struck, said Cmdr. LaDon Reynolds.

About 20 minutes later, Marcus Backstrom, 29, of the 1100 block of South Austin Boulevard, Oak Park, was arrested and charged with felony failure to stop after an accident involving personal injury. He was also cited for driving with a suspended license and failure to stop at a stop sign, Oak Park police said.

Multiple witnesses saw the incident, which led police to Backstrom, Reynolds said.

The boy was transported to the hospital with abrasions, but Reynolds said the injuries were not considered serious.
