There is still time to ensure that your child has a fun-filled and educational summer camp experience — from water park, museum, and baseball game visits, to arts and crafts, sports tournaments, reading games, and watermelon-seed-spitting contests. Oasis Summer Day Camp, the North Shore’s premier camp for children ages 5 to 12, has openings for its upcoming summer sessions, which begin on June 13. Register on-line at www.oasisdaycamp.com, or call (847) 858-0415. An Open House will be held on May 22, at 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Oasis Camp offers weekly schedules to satisfy creative, active, and adventurous campers — boys and girls alike. This summer’s sessions begin on June 13 through August 12. Located in Winnetka, Illinois, at 180 Ridge Avenue, camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop off begins at 8 a.m. and pick up ends by 5:30 p.m.

The camp was founded by Brooke Schamber, who grew up in Northbrook and is a 1997 graduate of Glenbrook North High School, along with her husband James.

Oasis brings a fresh approach to the summer camp experience with a mix of field trips, sports, and creative learning. The founders are both trained professionals in education and child and family services. Brooke, a high school psychologist, has extensive experience in child and adolescent development, education, and family models. James, a second-grade teacher and athletic coach, holds a graduate degree in curriculum and instruction. The Schambers worked with summer camps in the North Shore area for many years.

“Camp founders Brooke and James Schamber have succeeded in creating the ideal summer camp experience,” says Elizabeth Pardoe of Evanston whose kids have attended Oasis for the past three years. “They combine intellectual stimulation, healthy socialization, physical fitness, and just plain old-fashioned fun.”

“My kids have had the best summer of their lives, and my husband and I revel in the knowledge that they are thriving under such loving and attentive care,” says Pardoe.

Field trips include visits to museums, zoos, water parks, pools, beaches, county fairs, roller skating parks, baseball games, farms, arcades, and sports parks. Activities include cooking and sailing lessons, sports tournaments, group folly performances, watermelon-seed-spitting and costume competitions, and water wars. In addition, Mad Science provides hands-on instruction to campers on a variety of topics.

The camp also promotes literacy year-round with an incentive-based reading program to help campers develop, strengthen, and enjoy reading. Campers participating in the Tree Fort Challenge reading game receive prizes for reaching milestones.

Oasis employs counselors, who are professionals in education and recreation fields, as well as qualified college students, to promote a camp atmosphere of fun, adventure, sportsmanship, and creativity. Child safety is a number one priority for Oasis Camp. With an impressive, low staff-to-camper ratio of 1 to 7, all staff are CPR certified. Professional bus companies with licensed drivers are employed to transport children during field trips. All buses are air-conditioned and have seat belts.

As an added convenience, campers also receive a balanced, healthy lunch once a week, delivered by Gourmet Gorrilla, a kids’ lunch service. Parents can also choose this lunch option 5-days-a-week.
