New Dist. 225 communications plan moving along, website still in the works

Glenbrook High School District 225 officials have completed most of their goals related to a new communications plan, but some major initiatives, including a new website, are still on the way.

Addressing the Board of Education last week, Director of Public Relations and Communications Karen Geddeis said the district has completed “about 90 percent” of its communications goals it has laid out over the past year.

Those goals include launching interactive calendars, creating social media pages and profiles, and establishing new policies for interacting with the public.

“This has all helped us work better with our media,” Geddeis said.

The social media initiatives have gone over well with students, she said. Glenbrook North High School students seemed to have latched onto the Twitter profile, while Glenbrook South students have preferred the new Facebook page for communicating, Geddeis said.

The district also hired a new public relations assistant, who Geddeis said has worked with student media groups.

Starting this month, the Public Relations and Communications Department will hold student press conferences, “making some things that don’t sound that hip, hip to them,” Geddeis said.

One aspect of the communications plan that has yet to take effect, though, is the redesigned District 225 website. Last summer, district officials said the site could launch by Jan. 1.

But Geddeis said the process is taking longer than anticipated, because the district is building the site on its own. She said the site could launch by May 1, or September at the latest.

“It’s a complex design,” she said.

She added that the new design would be better in the long run, as it would be able to “be in a constant state of evolving.”

With the new initiatives, the district also has switched to more electronic newsletters, saving about $10,000 a year in printing costs, Geddeis said.

The new plan is intended to improve communication with the public and make them more aware of happenings in the district.
