Sheriffs in Skokie find good cause in close shave
On a typical Monday afternoon, Carm Lollino can be found styling womens hair at her salon, Instyle Hair Design in Des Plaines. But the hair maven found herself in unfamiliar territory April 5 as she shaved the heads of deputy sheriffs at the Skokie Courthouse.
Nine sheriffs office employees volunteered to face the clippersand the occasional ridicule from colleaguesfor the St. Baldricks Foundation, a non-profit charity that raises money for childrens cancer research through head-shaving events.
Organized by Chief Lou Sbarboro and Lt. Mike Foster, the sheriffs office smashed its initial fundraising goal of $1,000, collecting more than $8,000 for the charity.
Its for kids cancer research, which theres no better cause, Foster said.
The brave shavees were: Sbarboro, deputy sheriffs Patrick Hecker, Maury Gantman, Rocco Tudisco, Nicholas Margarites, Marty Lowery and John OMalley, and custodial employees Ted Cook and Jack Smith.
Even a passerby got in on the hair-cutting action. Northbrook resident Paul Erickson came to the courthouse for court, but decided to make a donation and have his head shaved.
Its for a good cause, so I figured what the heck, Erickson said. Its hairitll grow back.
