The 103-strong award-winning Lincoln-Way Central Marching Knights traveled to Benedictine University on Saturday for the Naperville Central Marching Classic where they finished first in class AAA.
The Marching Knights finished first place in class AAA with a score of 101.65, Eureka High school scored 81.4 to take second place followed by Richards High school with 73.1 to earn third place.
“The band continues to improve weekly, and we are looking forward to a very successful October ahead of us,” stated Eric Wellman, Director of Bands for Lincoln-Way Central.
A total of 20 high school bands competed in the Naperville Central Marching Classic, along with Naperville Central High School and Wisconsin Eau Claire High School in exhibition.
The Marching Knights took home caption awards for Outstanding Guard, Percussion Music GE, and Visual GE for the entire competition, regardless of class, noted Wellman.
The Marching Knights field show for the 2011 competitive season is entitled “Ubuntu” which is a South African concept of community. The basic premise is putting the group before the individual. The main saying of this concept is “I Am, Because We Are,” noted Wellman.
The music is very rhythmic in nature and features our percussion section, guard, and soloists Kathy Caponigro and Kizzie Cobden, added the band director.
The Marching Knights will be performing during the half time show in the Knights Stadium this Friday, October 7.
Drum majors are Brandon Moy, Sarah Martin, and Kevin Tishka.
